For the second year in a row both Lurgan teams won the right to challenge the very best that Ulster hockey has at this level. While the A team got off to a flying start with a 1-0 victory, Lurgan B team were unlucky and defeated by one goal by Lisnagarvey A. They then rallied and manage to hold their next two matches to a scoreless draw while the A team drew 0-0 in their next match and won their last match 2-0 against Ards.
This put the A team through to the cup competition as they won their group, and Lurgan B progressed to the plate section. Both teams stepped up to the mark as they now were playing on the more familiar ¾ pitch and with more room at their disposal were able to turn on the style with two convincing wins each and both found themselves in the final of each section, something that has never happened before in Lurgan’s history. Both teams now found themselves up against the only other club that had an A and B team represented, Randalstown. Both A teams were to compete for the Cup while the two B teams squared off for the Plate.
The A teams were up first and Randalstown put Lurgan on the back foot early with a quick goal from a set piece. To their credit Lurgan never gave up the chase and late into the game Hannah Grieve equalled the score from an excellently executed penalty corner strike. As the final whistle blew the game was tied and the teams shared the cup. The B teams were next to step onto pitch. The hockey flowed from one end to the other with both sides weathering hairy moments in defence. Each had their chance to put the game to bed but solid defending kept the scoreline 0-0. A last minute breakaway from Kathryn Edgar looked like she was going to snatch the Plate right at the death, but the ‘keeper pulled of a nifty save as the final whistle was blown. As in the A match both teams shared the trophy.
It is a true measure of both clubs that they can field such talent in two teams. Never before has this happened at Finals Day, it was a truly unique experience for both clubs and one that Lurgan will remember for a very long time. How this club has progressed over the last few years has been quite remarkable and is in no small way thanks to the coaching they have received over very many years, and their true perseverance and dedication to their club. Special thanks to Charles Hurst, proud sponsors of Lurgan Ladies HC.
