Ards came in search of points in their bid to qualify for the Irish Hockey League next season but they left pointless and deflated after a five goal drubbing by a Lurgan team in devastating form. Right from the off it was obvious that Lurgan were well up for this match as they flooded forward and forced Ards on the defensive. Good inventive play from Sarah McClure and Zoe McNally resulted in the first penalty corner for Lurgan and, although this one was well saved by the keeper, she was helpless 3 minutes later as Charlene Hull drilled the next one against the back-board just inside her left hand post to give Lurgan the lead. Ards stung by this early strike went in search of an equaliser and on 16 minutes they got their reward with a penalty corner re-take conversion of their own after the initial shot had been well saved by Vickie Parks in the Lurgan goal. This equaliser only stung Lurgan into greater action and their passing and moving from defence to midfield to forward line had the Ards team at sixes and sevens. On 22 minutes Jenny Harvey went on one of her trade-mark runs that left the Ards midfield in her wake and she slid a perfect ball which completely split the Ards defence through to striker Zoe McNally. There is no-one more accomplished in a one- on -one with the keeper than Zoe and she beautifully rounded her and swept the ball into the net to restore Lurgan's lead.
Lurgan’s lead at half time was a slender 2-1 but the way they had played in the first half indicated that there was more to come and the Lurgan fans looked forward with optimism to the second half. Any hope Ards had of a revival were quickly dispelled at the start of the second half. Lurgan pummelled them right from the out-set . A penalty corner 7 minutes in was scrambled clear by the Ards defence and 5 minutes later a well constructed Lurgan attack resulted in a Carly Johnston shot being well saved by the keeper and then cleared. But Lurgan were relentless in their attacks and 2 minutes later the Ards defence cracked after a beautiful piece of play from Chloe McIlwaine. She won the ball in midfield, slipped one tackle and fed a superb pass to Zoe McNally who drew the keeper and squared to fellow striker Joanne Wilson who thumped the ball against the back-board. Lurgan were 3-1 up and unfortunately for Ards were a team hungry for more. Full back Lyndsey Fulton then got in on the act as she cleverly linked up with Carly Johnston down the Lurgan left wing and won another penalty corner. The initial strike was saved by the keeper but the ball rebounded to Chloe McIlwaine whose strike deflected off a defenders stick and into the net .Lurgan were now totally in control and with 7 minutes to go they got number 5 from another penalty corner. In a well worked move, straight from the training ground, a Charlene Hull strike was beautifully deflected into the roof of the net past a despairing Ards keeper. This was undoubtedly Lurgan's best team performance of the season and everyone on the pitch can be justifiably proud of the contribution they made.
